THE UNEXPECTED ALTERNATIVES TO TRADITIONAL ‘WORK-LIFE BALANCE’

Labels on a balance beam illustrates the concept of work-life balance for lawyers

Throughout the last decade, the idea of work-life balance has become increasingly popular. So, what does the term actually mean? According to the Cambridge Dictionary, it can be defined as “the amount of time you spend doing your job compared with the amount of time you spend with your family and doing things you enjoy.” In entertainment, this concept is often portrayed by characters who are somehow able to juggle a full case-load, spend time on their hobbies, and provide top-notch parenting. For many of us, that lifestyle is simply not realistic.

In this article, we’re going to propose an unexpected alternative to the traditionally depicted work-life balance. We hope it will help you achieve your goals and create true harmony in your life.

The Problem with Balancing

If you’ve struggled with work-life balancing strategies in the past, you’ve already encountered the logical fallacy of balancing.

Close your eyes and imagine a scale. To balance that scale, you must place different objects on either side until both of the weights are equal. This requires fully separating the different weighted components. Unlike inanimate objects, real-life responsibilities can’t be so easily compartmentalized. Many legal professionals find themselves working unscheduled hours, and parents cannot always choose when their children need them. At the end of the day, your career, your family, your personal hobbies and your friends must coexist.

Outlining Your Goals

While it may sound simple, the first step to finding harmony in your life is defining your personal goals. By understanding your goals, you’ll gain new insight that can help you manage your time more effectively. Are you hoping to start a solo practice or dreaming of making partner at your firm? Do you want a nomadic lifestyle filled with travel, or do you prefer the comfort and stability of your hometown?

Defining Your Priorities

After you’ve explored your goals, take some time to reflect on your current priorities. Goals and priorities are distinctly different, although the words are sometimes used interchangeably. Most goals involve tangible outcomes, whereas priorities are the things in your life that you regard as most important. For example, your priority might be spending time with family or improving your skills in a chosen hobby.

If you’re struggling to define your priorities, try to imagine a situation where you have no obligations or responsibilities. What would you still feel passionate about? How would you spend your time? Remember: there are no wrong answers.

Embrace the Creative

Once you’ve defined your goals and priorities, it’s time to get creative. With some determination and just a little bit of luck, you can find ways to integrate your priorities with your long-term goals. For example, if you’d like to spend more time with your friends, consider starting a project or an activity that you can work on together, or invite them to take part in your hobbies. Eager to spend more time with your children or pets? By working remotely, you may be able to eliminate your commute and go about your day with increased flexibility.

Final Thoughts

While the term ‘work-life balance’ can be misleading, its intention is admirable. The goal of the movement is simply to help people achieve total body wellness and positive mental health outcomes. By letting go of your expectations and being honest with yourself, you can find a sustainable routine that suits your lifestyle.
